Exploring around Broadford

The nearest village to Tigh na Allt is Broadford which has a Co op supermarket, a handful of local craft shops with a good selection of gifts and coffee. The carpark looks out to the often choppy seas and colourful fishing boats moored along the pier. There are some glorious walks and stretches of coastal scenery around Broadford.

Ashaig Beach

From the main road just past Broadford on the A87, turn into the small winding road toward Lower Breakish until you arrive at a graveyard which is associated with Saint Maelrubha the irish saint. Nearby is the sacred well of Tobar Ashik. A track to the shore leads down to the gate to the beach.. At low tide you can walk out across the shoreline to a wide sandy beach further out. Look out for the coastal flowers, variety of different seaweeds and intricate patterned rocks of Bassalt Quartz. If you are lucky you may even see a seal and always an abundance of seabirds, enjoy this open expanse of this coastal terrain. This magnificant beach can only be reached at low tides. The river runs into the beach here so take care if there has been lots of rain, as at these times the river can swell making it difficult to cross. Looking straight out to sea on the horizon is Pabay Island, the name comes from the Norse word ‘Papey’ meaning Preists Island and suggests a spiritual history.

Waterloo Beach

Waterloo Beach is a great place to visit when the tide is out as it reveals a textured landscape of sand islands and rock pools, against an everchanging backdrop of the hills behind Broadford. There is always many seabirds here even on a windy rainy day. Walk along the beginning of Waterloo Road which starts from the A87 from Broadford, and wander out towards Ardnish Peninsular, a long grassy peninsular popular with bird-watchers. There is often livestock along the peninsular and if you love beachcombing, there are many shells, remnants of sea vegetation and driftwood objects washed in amongst the rocks along this part of the coast.
